BASIC KNOWLEDGE
Despite being conceived in Saudi Arabia, Kim Yugyeom was born in Namyangju, South Korea, in 1997. While pursuing a career in dance, Yugyeom graduated from Hanlim Arts High School with a major in ‘Street Dance’ before studying ‘Modelling’ at Daekyeung University.
CAREER
Having grown up watching performances from Big Bang and J. Y. Park, Yugeom became fascinated with dance and, at the age of 14, began dancing with the Body & Soul crew. Alongside the crew, Yugyeom placed second at the national Adrenaline House Dance Battle competition in 2010. He then caught the attention of his cousin, a dance academy instructor, with his performance at the Hidden Performing Arts Tournament who invited him to attend her academy. While a student of the academy, Yugyeom was provided with connections which allowed him to audition for JYP Entertainment via another instructor of the academy who also taught JYP Entertainment trainees.
Upon being accepted as a trainee at JYP Entertainment in 2010, Yugyeom worked hard for 4 years, partook in the Mnet reality-survival program WIN: Who Is Next, and eventually debuted as a member of GOT7 in 2014. The group found success not just in Korea, but globally, and saw Yugyeom grow through writing and composing tracks for the group including ‘Thank You, Sorry’ off of GOT7’s final album ‘Breath of Love : Last Piece’ (2020) and creating choreographies for songs such as, ‘If You Do’ and ‘Poison’. In 2021, all 7 members decided not to renew their contracts with JYP Entertainment, allowing Yugyeom to pursue a solo career within K Hip-Hop and KR&B under AOMG MUSIC.
During a freestyle jam with fellow dancer and choreographer Monster Woo, it was suggested that Yugyeum showcase his own colour as an artist with AOMG. Thanks to Monster Woo, Yugyeom was put in contact with Pumpkin, who later introduced him to founder and CEO of the label, Jay Park. Yugyeom was officially introduced to the public as a member of the AOMG family on the 19th of February 2021, with the release of a high budget choreography video to Travis Scott’ ‘Franchise’. Soon after, it was announced that he would be making his solo debut in June 2021 with the release of his EP ‘Point of View: U’ which included features and collaborations from fellow label mates: DeVita, GRAY, Loco, Jay Park and Punchello.
Yugyeom has continued to release R&B inspired tracks since signing to AOMG, such as ‘Take You Down’ featuring Coogie (2022), and will begin touring Europe come the beginning of May.
